Corylus colurna Turkish Tree HazelWestArbOakArt6.html

Above ,Turkish Tree Hazel, planted by accident (landscaper meant to plant CA native hazelnut, Corylus cornuta) from a #5 roughly 15 years before picture taken. Minimal extra watering on thin terrace soils. Above right photo shows fall color in Santa Cruz - fall color may be more striking in cooler fall climates. No fruit witnessed so far - domesticated filberts are also known, according to UC Cooperative Extension, to be non-producers in the Santa Cruz area. Expect low/no fruit in areas with strong coastal influence - including SF, Oakland, lower Berkeley and most of the Peninsula - thus, worth street tree trial.

Above, a young Turkish Tree Hazel growing without irrigation in the Stanford Arboretum. Performing well in tough conditions.

A mature Turkish Tree Hazel in a European park, where they are common.

The fruit of Turkish Tree Hazel. They are even more striking in person. If planted in hot summer climates in California without strong maritime influence, fruit production will argue against use as a street tree. Great for parks throughout California.
